Italian citizenship through marriage or civil union to an Italian citizen is regulated by Articles 5, 6, 7 and 8 of Law n. 91 of 1992 on Italian Citizenship.
The non-Italian Spouse married to an Italian can apply for Italian citizenship by marriage 2020 after 2 years from the marriage/civil union, if residing in Italy.
This term is reduced by half if the couple has children under the age of 18, or when children are legally adopted by the couple.
Foreigners residing outside Italy are eligible to apply for Italian citizenship by marriage 3 years after the date of marriage/civil union to an Italian Citizen.

The fees for Italian citizenship by marriage 2020 application is €250 to be paid by wire transfer into the account of the Italian Ministry of Interior.

Law December 1, 2018 n. 32) introduced a new requirement for applications for Italian citizenship and also for Italian Citizenship by marriage 2020, of course.
The Law establishes that applicants for Italian citizenship by marriage must have an adequate knowledge of the Italian language (B1 level).
This must be certified by an educational institution approved by the Italian Ministry of Education (“MIUR”) or Ministry of Foreign affairs (“MAECI”).
So, pay attention.
You cannot have a general and simple Language Certificate.
You have to obtain an Italian Certification only through Certificated Schools.
The above rules and processing time do not apply to the automatic acquisition of Italian citizenship by marriage that occurred before the date of April 27, 1983.
(only for foreign women married before that date).

Same-sex couples are provided with most of the protections that are provided to married couples.

Besides requirements outlined above, in order to start the citizenship process, the Italian spouse must be registered with the AIRE (if residing abroad).
And must have already registered the foreign marriage record, through the local Italian consulate.
Additionally, the comune must have already registered the marriage/civil union record in Italy.
The first step, therefore, is verifying that the marriage record is already on file with the Italian comune.
Then, that the Italian spouse is correctly registered with the AIRE.
And then, that the residence address on file at the consulate is current.
Without these steps, it’s not possible to proceed with Italian Citizenship by Marriage 2020 Application.
It depends on your residence.
If you are Italian resident, You have to fill everything with Prefettura.
If you are Foreign resident, You have to fill everything with Consulate.
